The Shortage of Child Psychiatrists
Monday, May 12, 2008 1:15 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Hearing Room C, Legislative Office Building, Albany
Panel Presentation hosted by the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy. One in five children has a diagnosable mental or emotional disorder but nearly two-thirds of them go without treatment. Early recognition and prompt access to treatment can prevent lifelong problems for the child and family. The shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists forces most children to go without treatment or see other practitioners who may not have training or experience to appropriately treat them. There are less than 900 child and adolescent psychiatrists in New York and almost half of the counties in the state have no child and adolescent psychiatrists. This problem is particularly acute in rural areas of the state. What can New York State do to address this nationwide shortage?
